Need More Clarity?
When you’re looking for greater clarity in your life and work, what do you do?…
When you want to get clear on something that matters, there are lots of different strategies you can try, to help you see things more clearly.
Whether you pray, get out a pen and paper, get outside and go for a walk, talk it out with someone, take a class, tidy up and organise your space, cut out all distractions, take a shower, or a nap (seriously!..) - there are a diverse range of things that can make a difference.
At a time I’m needing to make some decisions about moving forward with various projects, I’m enjoying trying a number of these on for size. Gratefully, as I think and pray and wait - and take action, some of the things seem to be coming into focus - and I’ll look forward to sharing more here soon.
What I’ve been reminded of this week, is that when it comes to clarity strategies, different things work for different people - and for the same people at different times.
Reminding yourself of what has helped you get clear in the past, might prompt you to give that strategy another go now. I know people who always book in a long walk when they need time to think - or go to a place that has particular meaning for them.
Some of us have reliable strategies, that work for us time and time again.
But sometimes, it’s not that straightforward.
Things that have worked in the past, don’t always help in the present. At times like these, it can be good to try something different.
So, here’s what I’ve been learning (more accurately, re-learning) over the last few weeks.
You can’t force clarity.
And that’s a good thing.
When we’re tempted to try to force or manufacture man-made-clarity, it’s easy to end up focussing on the wrong things, especially if they’re the only things we can bring into focus all-by-ourselves, from where we are right now.
If ONLY finding more clarity was as easy as lining yourself up behind a pair of binoculars, with a view to a far horizon - and pocket full of loose change.
I’ve known times when I’ve suddenly experienced incredible clarity - but more often it’s not like that.
Clarity often requires slow, patient, unhurried work on our part - and the humility to acknowledge that - on a human level, we don’t get to see or know all the things. Not on our timescale. And sometimes not ever.
The search for clarity also requires trust.
We often need to learn to trust God and others - as well as ourselves.
Experiencing greater clarity is sometimes about waiting - and sometimes about moving - and changing our position. The view from the same spot can vary enormously at different times of day, or with different ‘weather’; but for things to become clear, we may also need to be standing in a different place.
Sometimes we need to get right up close to things, so we can try them out and try them on. At other times, putting some distance between ourselves and the object of our interest and attention can give us a more useful perspective.
There are also times when we need to look away - and completely refocus our attention, onto something else - or someone else.
Clarity is good - but it’s possible to make an idol out of the thing we want to get clear about (the latest project, the new job, the dream house or possible future relationship) - or even make an idol of clarity itself.
Clarity isn’t God.
But here’s the thing:
Knowing that we can’t force clarity, can make it tempting to abandon the responsibility we do have for taking action (including actively waiting) - and do what we can do ourselves, to help us see things more clearly.
The ongoing challenge, is to know how best to combine strategy and action - with actively, patiently waiting. And keeping our attention and focus in exactly the right place.
